The City of North Bay has a bit less humid climate than the climate in Southern Ontario, thanks to the distance from the Great Lakes, while at the same time it’s less warm in North Bay than in some other locations in the region, because of the cooling from Lake Nipissing. The first explorer of the area where North Bay is located today was Samuel de Champlain. Outside of surveyors, voyageurs, and Indian tribes, there wasn’t much activity in the area of the Lake Nipissing. But that was only true until the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1882. It caused the establishment of the settlement of North Bay, which was incorporated as a town later, in 1891, with its first mayor becoming John Bourke. It wasn’t until August 1925 that the town was incorporated as a City of North Bay.

In 1934, just on the outskirts of the City of North Bay, in Corbeil, the Dionne Quintuplets were born. The tourism in the region was instantly affected by this miraculous birth – in fact, they may have saved the economy in the area within the times of the Depression and beyond. The city and the surrounding area lived off this legacy well into the 1960's. Many tourists coming to the region found summer retreats and lakes, which were effortlessly accessible, allowing the businesses to prosper on the tourist money. The City of North Bay is situated about 330 km north of Toronto and is a little different in geography than Southern Ontario, since North Bay is located on the Canadian Shield. This is the cause of a different and more rugged landscape. The City of North Bay is geographically unique, because it straddles the Great Lakes watershed to the west, while at the same time straddling Ottawa River watershed to the east.
